(BUFFALO, NY/FORT ERIE, ON) – The Peace Bridge Authority (PBA) has decided to honor its Chairman, Paul Koessler, who passed away this summer, by sponsoring a $5,000/year transportation/bridge engineering scholarship at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB). The scholarship will run for 10 years.

“The Board decided that a scholarship of this nature was in keeping with what the PBA does while at the same time recognizes Mr. Koessler’s extraordinary contributions to the PBA and the community” said Chairman Ken Schoetz.

The Buffalo Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will be coordinating the program on behalf of the PBA. “We are pleased to be assisting the PBA with administration of the program, especially with its emphasis on supporting civil engineering right here in Western New York” said Angela Hintz, president of the Buffalo Section of ASCE.

The scholarship program is restricted to junior or senior students or graduate students attending UB. Jason Havens, a UB alumni and member of the Buffalo Section who acts as a practitioner advisor to the local student chapter says, “It is an honor and a privilege for the UB civil engineering students to have been provided this excellent opportunity by the PBA to participate in a program that represents a local engineering icon and aims at promoting locally educated civil engineers to remain in WNY after graduation.”

The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, a binational bridge authority, has owned and operated the Peace Bridge since 1933. The bridge, which was opened to traffic in 1927, spans the Niagara River between Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York, and is a key international border crossing. The Authority is governed by a 10 member board with an equal number of representatives from Canada and the United States.
